Handling negative thoughts and emotions

Whenever a negative thought crosses our mind, most of us react to it or succumb to it easily. By nature, many of us are emotionally oriented people, i.e. people who react to emotions quickly. Such folks are easily vulnerable to discouragement and hurt. How are we to handle negative thoughts especially when we fall prey to negative emotions? The solution is not difficult but has to be cultivated as a habit. For every negative thought or emotion we face, we need to replace that thought with God's Word. We need to keep repeating that Word of God or promise in our mind, until it sinks into our emotion.

For instance if our need is physical healing, then we ought to replace every negative thought with the Word of God saying, 'By His wounds we are healed' (Isa 53:5).

If our need is a provision or a blessing, then the Word of God we need to repeatedly replace in our mind is, 'The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing' (Psa 34:10)

There is a promise and God's Word for each and every situation in our life; and we all know that we need to proclaim it by faith until we receive it. But the waiting time till we receive the answer may be annoying and frustrating. But if we can learn to replace every negative outcome or thought or emotion, with God's Word, then we can lead our daily life with assurance of our faith sinking into our emotions and thoughts; rather than being tossed to and fro like waves of the sea...

Psalms 119:28 (NIV)
My soul is weary with sorrow;
strengthen me according to your word.

However emotional we may be...God's Word is our strength.
