When we are keen on doing God's will, the Holy Spirit of God will reveal God's will to us through convictions which is foreign to our thoughts, desires and emotions. These convictions will be so clear beyond doubt that we will know that it is from the Lord and not our own. Sometimes it is may be something that we desire and sometimes not. However the peace of God will accompany the thought process which confirms God's will.
Many a time, if the will of God is something against our thought process, we may try to achieve what we want to, through our efforts. And that is the when we will lose our peace. So it is better that we do God's will so that we may keep our peace and not face the consequences of doing our own will.
Isaiah 26:3 (New King James Version)
You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.
